Getting a pet
seemed so easy. But they bring a whole truck of responsibilities, which you
realize when you’ve got them roaming at your home.
I have two rabbits.
And I named them Orea and Marshmello (Ya, I love food :P). They turned three
this year and I wanted to share how crazy these three years went!
It all started
before my 10th board exams. I asked my parents for a promise that if
I get 90 or more percentage, they’ll get me a puppy, as I always wanted one but
was a bit under-aged to get one. My parents agreed thinking I am just a kiddo and
will forget about it soon. Little did they know, that I was pretty serious
about it and was determined to get one.
When my board
results came, I got more than 90%. And as per the promise I asked my parents to
get me a puppy. They said that I might not get that much time to take care of
them as I was going to join JEE coaching and that was pretty heartbreaking.
One Sunday, my mom
said that let’s go and get rabbits. She said that they don’t need much care (hahahaha..slow
laughs) and are less expensive. My dad didn’t have any idea that there will be
a new member in our family when he’ll return. We went to a Sunday market and we
asked for rabbits. We came across a guy who was selling them. He had white,
brown, black rabbits, some multicolour too.
I selected the white
ones (the classics :P). He gave two
rabbits saying that they were a couple (•́
‿ ,•̀)
. Later on, we came to know that they are not a couple, they are two very cute
(but naughty) boys.
I still remember
that day we got them. They were so small (almost a week old). We brought them
home in a shoe box. They were very nervous and afraid of us. They were
literally shivering the whole way to my home.
When
we reached home, mom gave them a nice bath. They were neat and clean. I was so
afraid to pick them up. When I picked them up for the first one, I felt their
heartbeats and it was so fast, I got so scared that I dropped them. Luckily,
nothing happened.
Also,
we didn’t know what food they eat. We thought they are babies so milk would be
a good meal, so we bought a milk bottle which is used to feed infants. That
bottle is now in a storage room, rotting for 3 years. We also gave them water
to drink. But, gradually we came to know that they don’t drink water. I was a
bit afraid when they didn’t drink water, but some personal research in Google
showed that not all rabbits drink water. It was a bit of a shock for us. Then
we gave them tomatoes, cabbage and coriander. Out of which, they were pleased
by coriander only. They quickly ate it as if they were hungry from ages.
They
have variety of food suppliers too. My mom gets them grass from her college. My
dad gets them cabbage leaves which vegetable vendors usually throw away. Our
neighbour gives us fresh grass whenever he cleans his garden. There is a lady which
gives my dad carrots, cabbage and coriander for them. My mom makes them roti
and rice. The lemon tree in my garden gives them their favourite leaves. They
also love watermelon and mangoes during summer. My mom experiments with any
random leaves she thinks that they’ll eat. And majorly, they eat everything my
mom gives them. Sometimes, we don’t even know the name of the plant, and that
becomes their favourite food. I mean who cares about the name, we just gotta eat.
With
time, they got used to their new home. They figured out so many hiding places
like under my cupboard, behind my study table, behind the bucket and many more.
They love cozy dark places to sleep. Somedays, are like sleeping and hiding and
somedays are like sleeping in front of the bathroom, so that we can watch
people come out all clean even though we are not.
They
were so small in size that they can sit comfortably on my palm. And now they
are so big that my two hands are getting smaller to hold them.
I
still remember their first home which was a red basket. When I was small, my
mom used to put my clothes in that, and now my babies are staying in it. Soon,
this basket was small for them to sleep, so we got them a cage, which was
basically a bird cage but they got used to it soon. Then, we asked a carpenter
friend of my dad to build a customized cage for us. The present cage is so big
that even I can sit in it (I have not tried it J
). To make their new cage a bit entertaining, we kept a potty tray (you pretty much know what it's use for :P), an igloo (which
was a bucket with a hole made in it by my mom), some extra drawers and water
pots (in which they sit) and a soft blanket (to cuddle).
These
two are so different from each other. Oreo loves to eat roti, rice and all the
indian stuffs. While Marshmellow loves to eat fresh vegetables i.e. carrots,
cabbage, coriander,etc. Oreo loves to
take bath, and marshmello hates it, he runs away as soon as it’s his chance to
take bath. Orea is a bit introvert while
Marshmellow is highly extrovert person.
Whenever
we have guests at home and they want to meet them, Oreo becomes invisible,
while Marshmello comes running to the door of the cage, so that we pick him up
and cuddle him. He loves to lick people. He is a people’s rabbit :P.
These
three years has been such an incredible journey for me and my family. I thought
that you just have to give them food, play with them and that’s it. After three
years, I have realized it’s so much more than just feeding and playing. It’s
about bathing them, seeing if they are not hungry, cleaning their poop,
cleaning myself after having a good play, brushing them and so much more.
It’s
like having a human baby. Though, human babies make noise. Luckily, mine are just
quiet little kiddos who love to sleep and eat.
